Collective Noun

Collective Noun: It is the name given to a group of similar persons, objects, animals od things. Example pack, herd, army etc.

1. Most collective nouns are countable nouns, which can be used with a or an (or other determiners) and made plural:

  • Carol plays the drums in a band.
  • Both teams played well.
  • 2. However, you often use the before collective nouns:

  • The jury entered the courtroom.
  • Some of the staff may lose their jobs.
  • 3. You can use a singular or plural verb with a singular collective noun. You use a singular verb when you are thinking of the group as a unit:

  • My family comes from Hong Kong.
  • The committee is too large.
  •    You use a plural verb when you are thinking of the group as individuals:

  • My family were pleased to see me again.
  • The committee are considering further action.
  • 4. If you use a singular verb, you refer to the group with singular pronouns and determiners such as it and its:

  • The community has grown and it needs its own recreation centre.
  • The company looks after its employees and itself.
  •    If you use a plural verb, you refer to the group with plural pronouns and determiners such as they and their:

  • The team have been practising hard, so they hope to win their next month.
  • The gang were arguing among themselves.
